是状语从句。从语法结构来讲，英文的句子也是有各种成分组成的，主谓宾定补状等。只是在句子中，各种成分使用的顺序有别于汉语。Many years ago汉语意思就是许多年前，这是一种表时间的状语从句，用来说明某个事件发生的时间。只是没有像汉语一样紧跟动词。
意思是很多年前，相当于long long ago，表示过去，一般过去时，例如：
1、Many years ago， there were few trees in that area and the winds used to be very strong.许多年前，那个地区几乎没有树，风也很强。
2、Many years ago， in a small village， an old man was hired to clear the spring up on the mountain.许多年前，在一个小村庄里，一位老人被雇来清理山上的泉水。
